Rhinoplasty
Estimated price range$7,600 - $9,000
Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is a procedure to improve the appearance of your nose. When your nose is out of proportion or does not complement your face, it can affect self-image and confidence. Nose surgery can correct imperfections related to the cosmetic appearance of your nose.

These include:

  • Size of your nose in relation to facial balance
  • Nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils
  • Nose profile, with visible bumps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nasal tip, that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked
  • Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned
  • Nasal asymmetry

In some cases, the size of the nose may not be the only factor contributing to your facial imbalance. A small chin or weak cheeks may also contribute to the imbalance. In these cases, nose surgery may be performed in conjunction with the use of facial implants to achieve overall balance.

The best candidate for nose surgery is age 15 years or older as this is when facial growth is complete. You should be physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in your expectations.

The surgery is a same day surgery done under general anesthesia and lasts from 1-2 hours depending on the amount of enhancement being done. Recovery is usually another 2-3 hours, depending on your needs, before you are discharged home. You will return to our office the day following surgery to have the packing removed from your nose. You should be able to return to work after one or two weeks depending on the amount of bruising you have.

When nose surgery is done to improve breathing function, the cause is most commonly an obstructed airway. If you are looking at nose surgery due to impaired breathing versus for cosmetic reasons, you need to be treated by an ear, nose, and throat physician versus a plastic surgeon. If your surgery is to change the appearance of your nose, this procedure is considered cosmetic and is not covered by insurance.

Nose Surgery Consultation

Plan to spend 30 minutes to one hour at your initial consultation with Dr. Mukerji. During this consultation, you will discuss your surgery goals, your plastic surgery options and go over the risks and benefits involved with your surgery. Your decision to have surgery is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it.

Prior to your consultation, make a list of questions. Many things will be covered during your consultation and it is easy to forget all the questions you had. Be sure to let us know if you smoke, the medications you take including vitamins, and any other health problems. Be aware that smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict which reduces blood flow, and the oxygen it carries, to the surgical area. When your blood supply is reduced, tissues heal more slowly and there is an increased risk of complications. If you smoke, Dr. Mukerji will let you know if you need to quit smoking prior to your surgery and for how long. If you are required to quit smoking prior to surgery, a nicotine test will be administered on the morning of your surgery.

Typically, most of our surgeries are performed at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD under general anesthesia.
