If you always seem to look tired when you glance in the mirror or in photos, your eyelids might be to blame. These delicate tissues of the face are often the first to show signs of aging, although some people simply have naturally heavy eyelids or under-eye bags, even at a young age. While getting plenty of sleep is always helpful, plastic surgery may be the most effective solution. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sanjay Mukerji performs blepharoplasty, often called eyelid surgery, in Aberdeen to reveal your beautiful eyes with a naturally refreshed look.

Candidates for Eyelid Surgery

The women and men who visit Dr. Mukerji for eyelid surgery are typically over age 35, although younger patients who want to improve the appearance of their eyelids choose this procedure too. Good candidates are healthy, non-smokers who want to attain one or more of the following improvements:

  • Lift and smooth sagging upper eyelids
  • Reduce puffy under eye bags
  • Remove small fat bulges from around the eyes
  • Define the upper eyelid crease (patients of Asian descent)
  • Improve peripheral vision

Heavy upper eyelids can be caused by a sagging brow instead of lax eyelid skin. If this is the case, Dr. Mukerji may recommend a brow lift instead of upper eyelid surgery. Many patients benefit from a combination of the two procedures. Eyelid surgery can complement improvements from a facelift as well.

Your Consultation

Dr. Mukerji reserves 30 minutes to an hour for your complimentary cosmetic consultation to ensure it is informative and unrushed. He will review your medical history and carefully examine your eye area, facial structure, and skin elasticity. He will ask you to describe the improvements you hope to attain and review your treatment options—including possible risks—and help you understand your potential results. You will be given a written treatment plan and cost estimate to take with you and consider at home. You have the option of scheduling your surgery if you’re ready to do so.

About the Surgery

Dr. Mukerji performs eyelid surgery with either general anesthetic in a nearby hospital or with local anesthetic in his private office surgical suite. The procedure takes approximately 1 to 2 hours to complete depending on whether you’re having one set of eyelids done or both sets.

  • Upper eyelid incisions are made along the natural crease.
  • Lower eyelid incisions are made either inside the lower eyelids or along the lower lash line.

Through these incisions, Dr. Mukerji reduces excess fat and skin, and tightens lax muscles. He then closes the incisions with fine sutures.

Recovery After Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to return home the day of surgery in the care of an adult family member or friend. To minimize your recovery time, be sure to follow your post-op instructions closely. It is normal to have swelling and bruising around the eyes for the first week or so. You can keep these side-effects to a minimum by applying ice packs and keeping your head elevated at all times as directed.

While patient recovery rates vary, expect to be ready to return to work in approximately 3 days to a week depending on the amount of bruising you experience. You may return to work less than one week after surgery, although the sutures will need to remain in place for about a week.

Eyelid Surgery Results

Patients typically enjoy looking naturally refreshed after eyelid surgery. They often describe themselves as looking more rested or more “awake” after recovery from the procedure. Results should last for several years and can be enhanced with nonsurgical treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.
