Breast Reduction
Estimated price$5,910
Women with large, pendulous breast may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight – from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities to breathing problems or indentations in the shoulders from bra straps. A breast reduction removes fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts and may also reduce the size of your aerola. This surgery is performed for physicial relief rather than cosmetic improvement. The best candidate for surgery is a woman who is fully developed and mature enough to fully understand the procedure and have realistic expectations about the results.

In your initial consultation, measurements and photographs of your breasts will be taken by our nurse. After his examination of your breasts, Dr. Mukerji will discuss the variables that may affect the procedure – age, size and shape of breasts, and the condition of your skin. He will also estimate how many grams he will be able to safely remove without jeopardizing blood flow to the nipple and to keep your breasts in proportion to the rest of your body.

Some insurance companies may pay for breast reductions if it is medically necessary and if your policy has benefits that cover this procedure. Check your policy for benefits. We will submit your preauthorization letter to your insurance company. This letter will contain your measurements, photographs, and the grams estimate. Based on this information, your insurance company will determine if your surgery is medically necessary.

Depending on your age and family history, you may be required to have a mammogram prior to surgery. The surgery is a same day surgery done under general anesthesia and lasts about one and one-half hours to two hours. Recovery is usually another 2-3 hours, depending on your needs, before you are discharged home. You should be able to return to work in one week depending on the level of activity required for your job.

Although most of the swelling and bruising will disappear in the first few weeks, it may be six months to a year before your breasts settle into their new shape. Of all plastic surgery procedures, breast reduction results in the quickest body-image changes. You’ll be rid of the physical discomfort of large breasts, your body will look better proportioned, and clothes will fit you better.

Breast Reduction Consultation

Plan to spend 30 minutes to one hour at your initial consultation with Dr. Mukerji. During this consultation, you will discuss your surgery goals, your plastic surgery options and go over the risks and benefits involved with your surgery. Your decision to have surgery is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it.

Prior to your consultation, make a list of questions. Many things will be covered during your consultation and it is easy to forget all the questions you had. Be sure to let us know if you smoke, the medications you take including vitamins, and any other health problems. Be aware that smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict which reduces blood flow, and the oxygen it carries, to the surgical area. When your blood supply is reduced, tissues heal more slowly and there is an increased risk of complications. If you smoke, Dr. Mukerji will let you know if you need to quit smoking prior to your surgery and for how long. If you are required to quit smoking prior to surgery, a nicotine test will be administered on the morning of your surgery.

Typically, most of our surgeries are performed at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD under general anesthesia.
